Judgment under uncertainty: Heuristics and biases. Statistics in Schools - Lesson plans for all grades from the U. Goodlad's 1984 study confirms earlier reports that, even when students express a high interest in social studies topics, classroom treatment tends to reduce these topics to recitation of dates and places and displaces opportunities to explore relationships, draw inferences about human behavior, and make in-depth cultural comparisons. The purpose of the New Social Studies was to “capture the main ideas and current approaches to knowledge represented by the academic disciplines” (Marker & Mehlinger, 1992, p. 838).

Is there a place for cultural studies in colleges of education? Our history has many examples of how the construct of race has been used to oppress members of specific groups. To enhance the learning videos, pictures, encyclopedias (remember those?) and other educational aides are used. Moreover, the restructuring process itself occurs externally, in social discourse. This is similar to what bell hooks (1994; see also Florence, 1998) has called “engaged pedagogy,” a situation in which teachers’ “work is not merely to share information but to share in the intellectual and spiritual growth of [their] students” (p. 13).

Likewise, Bacchi (1999) designed her approach for policy arenas, but it has utility beyond policy making. What is the difference between History and Social Studies? • Social studies is the study of various aspects of a society and humanity. • History is the study of the various events that took place in the past in the realm of the human world. • The scope of social studies is to make students aware of the society or the world in large where they live. • The scope of history is to make students see where they come from and think about the actions of the ancestors. • Objectives or Learning Outcome: Some of the objectives in social studies are as follows: • Teaching how to gather, use and interpret evidence. • Understanding economics and economic systems. • Some of the objectives of history are as follows: • History is a part of social studies as history has an impact on the behavior of people. • Social studies has a broader focus on the world. • History is limited to learning about what happened in the bygone era. • A lesson in social studies will focus on a society, the geography of the area this society lives, the political system in place, the history of that society, etc. • A lesson in history focuses on about past historical events.
